Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of negative affects on binge eating behaviors and to find out whether difficulties with emotional regulation play a role as a mediator between the negative affects and the binge eating behaviors. Four hundred and sixty eight students of women¡¯s universities completed the questionnaires which were comprised of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, the Korean Version of Eating Attitudes Test-26, Bulimia Test Revised, and the Difficulties with Emotional Regulation Scale. The results were as follows. First, the correlational analysis showed statistically significant correlations among the negative affects, the binge eating behaviors, and the difficulties with emotional regulation. Second, the negative affects and difficulties with emotional regulation influenced the binge eating behaviors. Third, the series of regression analyses were conducted to find out whether difficulties with emotional regulation play a role as a mediator between the negative affects and binge eating behaviors respectively. The results exhibited that difficulties with emotional regulation mediated between the negative affects and binge eating behaviors. This implies that the negative affects influenced the binge eating behaviors in an indirect way rather than in a direct way. Forth, the limited access to emotional regulation strategies, no acknowledgment of emotional states and not paying attention to and awareness of emotional states among the difficulties with emotional regulation were identified as the sources that influenced the binge eating behaviors. The results of this study suggest that the intervention of both the negative affects and emotional regulation for the individuals complaining about binge eating behaviors would be more effective to decrease binge eating behaviors by improving emotional regulation rather than treating the negative affects only. Finally, the clinical limitations of this study and the suggestions for the future studies were also discussed.
